NEW TO STANDARD? HERE ARE THE BASICS.
We're putting on a big game night for our standard players! If you're not a standard player, it's easy to learn and we'll be giving away packs and prizes all night! Plus, you get a taco dinner on us from our tavern, fresh off the grill!
• Bring a deck with at least 60 cards. Exactly 60 is a common choice for consistent draws.
• Use Standard-legal cards. Check the current legal sets and banned list before the event; the card pool changes over time.
• Usually, four copies maximum. Across your main deck and sideboard combined, use no more than four of a card by name. Basic lands and cards whose text allows otherwise are exceptions.
• Your sideboard is optional: up to 15 cards. In best-of-three play, use it to adjust your deck between games.
• It’s one-on-one Magic. Players normally begin at 20 life with a seven-card opening hand.
A FEW DECK-BUILDING TIPS
• Choose one game plan. For example, play creatures early and attack, build a larger board, or control the game until your finisher is ready.
• Look for synergy. Pick cards that support each other: token-makers with cards that strengthen your whole team, or low-cost spells with creatures that reward spellcasting.
• Balance your mana. Include lands that cast your colors, useful early plays, and a few stronger later plays. These are suggestions, not format rules.
